How long did this project take your students? I want to do this with my middle school students but I only have 6 45 minute periods to complete it. I also have behavior and low-skill level issues that affect the time frame. Did you show them landscape pictures for ideas to draw the lines? Any other tips that helped make this successful? Thank you,Kellie
Hi Kellie! This took my students 2 one and half hour blocks. Yes, I gave them lots of examples of different landscapes and we talked about trying to come up with a particular place or environment to guide their lines. For example, one girl did a landscape inspired by Rio De Jianero (sp?). We talked about trying to make interesting lines (buildings, trees, mountains) and we did at least 5 sections. The middle section was the main color then they added black to the layers below and white to the layers behind. They were done with tempera...the hardest part for the kids was getting crisp lines (I had them outline it with a small brush, THEN fill it in) and mixing the right amount of white and black. Do you have a blog? If you get a chance, I'd love to see your results! Good luck. :) -Kerrie
loved your project. I am going to do a version of it for our Art Masterpiece program for my son's 3rd grade class in a few weeks. I think I am going to have them pre pick landscapes ahead of time and have them bring them to class that day. Will save some time and discussion. Beth
