Sacred Art Workshop: In the Style of Georges Rouault

Students studied the life and work of Christian artist, Georges Rouault.  They learned that Rouault spent time as an apprentice to a stained glass artist and that this experience profoundly influenced his work.  The students responded by creating landscapes inspired by Rouault's stained-glass like paintings, using tempera paint.

Sacred Art Workshop: Albrecht Durer

Students studied the life and work of German Renaissance artist, Albrecht Durer.  Students noticed his beautifully detailed drawings and woodcut prints inspired by his careful study of God's beautiful and complex world.  Students chose an animal to draw and study and went on to create a relief print with ink and styrofoam.

Sacred Art Workshop: Illuminated Manuscripts

Students studied illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages. They responded by designing and creating their own illuminated manuscript inspired by a Bible verse.  Watercolor pencil and metallic marker were used to add color and "glow"!

Sacred Art Workshop: Catacomb Paintings

Sacred Art students learned about the early Christian art found in the underground catacombs in Rome.  They identified common symbols (anchor, peacock, chi-rho, dove, fish) and discovered their meaning and significance.  Each student painted a tile using inspiration from these early Christian symbols and students worked by candle light, just like the early Christians!
